If there was ever a person with a destiny for politics, it was the late Attorney General Bob Shevin (D., Miami). From a sterling high school record, through college and law school, Bob Shevin had success marked all over him. He was the prototype of the new legislator elected during the Golden Era of Florida politics in 1960′s. He moved quickly through the House of Representatives, then the Senate. When incumbent Attorney General Earl Faircloth ran for Governor, Shevin quickly took his place on the Cabinet. He then started his long planned campaign for Governor in 1978. He had visionary ideas for education, health care, the environment, and his signature issue, crime fighting. He drew opponents, but most discharged them as unable to stop destiny. That was until a politically attractive State Senator from Miami Lakes named Bob Graham (and one of Shevin’s best friends) benefited from the run-off system in the Democratic primary. By a narrow margin, one destiny started for Governor Graham, and one destiny ended for Attorney General Bob Shevin.
