My friend George DePontis said in response to the 1972 campaign slogan, “Some men don’t need slogans,” is because “their PR guys couldn’t think them up.” Original or not, that was my campaign slogan in my first race for the legislature, and I must say it did turn some heads. My opponent was incumbent State Representative Jeff Gautier (D., Miami) who enjoyed a wonderful last name (he was related to venerable Florida State Senator Bunn Gautier), but a not so wonderful reputation. As reported in a previous Quorum Call, a civic activist also joined the race, Clark Merrill to reduce my chances of winning the election. I am sure my PR advisor, Ron Levitt, felt he wanted to position my campaign ’above the fray,’ and not needing an artificial campaign slogan. Given the outcome of the election, perhaps a catchy campaign slogan might have helped.
