Profiles in Courage, 1972

It is almost universal–the thirst for inspiration in our candidates for public service.  In fairness, many candidates are trying by carefully analyzing the polls, and declaring a position fully in alignment with the popular opinion.  But, I would argue that these candidates just “don’t get it,” and are misreading a great opportunity.  With my books and television commentary tied to the Golden Era of Florida politics 35 years ago, I am often asked, who were the great candidates then?  The one I most often cite is Governor Reuben Askew.  In his election as Governor in unseating an incumbent Governor in 1970, Askew actually advocated new taxes.  But his real demonstration of ‘Profiles in Courage’ was in 1972.  The country was rabidly against mandated busing to achieve racial balance in our schools.  Askew campaigned against that position and lost.  But his candor and integrity in pursuing his position resulted in his landslide re-election.  It can be done.
