Post # 232, Bob McKnight's Florida Commentary
How could the Republicans take a War, Record Inflation, a sometimes confused President, and the largest financial war chest ever and lose a double digit lead in the Mid-Terms? Here is how.
With 90 days to go until the Mid Term Elections, virtually all the national political observers have had the Republicans winning the House easily and squeaking out a win to take the Senate. That would leave the GOP in a perfect situation to take back the Presidency in 2024. But as former FSU football quarterback and ESPN Commentator Lee Corso would say, "Not so fast, my friend."
Consider the following:
As previously reported in this column, the Republicans got played by Democratic Senators Manchin and Shumer by passing the Climate Change Legislation, resulting in 16 leading Republican Senators voting against their favorite fuel industry, for Obama Care additional funding and to raise taxes on the wealthy. Many Republicans will never forget this $700 Billion gift to the Democrats, and some will not vote for their 16 Senators.
With Georgia and Pennsylvania as two easy to recapture states in the 50-50 Senate, Trump and the GOP managed to lower themselves to nominate former football star Herschel Walker and TV Doctor Helmed Oz, who have little or no knowledge of government. Both are behind in the polls by almost double digits, and are likely to lose.
The Supreme Court overturned abortion after almost 50 years of 'settled law,' which is now projected to deliver a near majority of GOP votes for pro abortion candidates, including Democrats. Conservative Kansas sent that message to the world last week.
The Democrats continue to flex their muscle internationally by strongly supporting Ukraine against Trump's buddy Putin, continuing to kill terrorists in Afghanistan and the Middle East. Contrary to general public opinion, it is the Democrats, not the Republicans who are in power when major terrorists and al Qaeda thugs are killed by America. That was the case with Osama Bin Laden, Ayman al-Zawahiri, and Abu Ibrahim al-Hashimi al-Qurayshi.
Senate Republicans applauded the courage of Democratic Speaker Nancy Pelosi for carrying out her support and visit to Taiwan. China protested and carried out some military exercises, but it was the Democrats and not the Republicans delivering military might for the free world.
After Trump tried to abandon NATO, under Biden, both the Republicans (with the lone exception of pro-Trumper Senator Josh Hawley) and Democrats voted to approve Finland and Sweden for NATO membership. The military brass are almost unanimously behind the Democrats as are the GOP Hawks.
Biden combines his attack on the climate danger of fossil fuels, while keeping gas prices moderate during the Russian attack on Ukraine.
The House Select Committee on January 6th's Capitol Attack, locks down indisputable proof of Trump's direct responsibility for the crime. Charges may come before the Mid Terms.
The African American vote for the Democrats is as unified as it has been since the first Obama election, and should show up big in the urban states. Racist attacks against many unarmed black citizens has locked that vote down for the Democrats.
Totalling public reaction to all the developments above has moved the needle for the Democrats to what could now be a toss up. Both sides are expected to have one more last minute surprise before the Mid Term elections. That could make the difference.
